In addition to the private sector projects, Mr. Meldrum completed work on countless Clark County School District schools and other public facilities, Cashman Field, UNLV buildings, the Las Vegas Convention Center, McCarran Airport runway and roadway expansions and the federal top secret, Area 51.  Mr. Meldrum performed roadway construction and improvement work for the State of Nevada and virtually every local government jurisdiction in southern Nevada over the 42 years he owned and operated Southern Nevada Paving.  There is not a municipal government entity in Clark County for which he has not built valuable, quality improvements.  Of tremendous importance, beyond his building and construction activities, Mr. Meldrum located, developed and maintained several of the most important sand and gravel claims and related trucking operations in the entire southern Nevada region.

Prior to Southern Nevada Paving’s sale in 2003, Meldrum’s company employed on average more than 500 employees.  His Company was the tenth largest contributor to the health and welfare fund for International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 12 in the Southern Nevada/Southern California Region.  Always exhibiting his standards of honesty and respect for others, Meldrum’s Company never defaulted on a single employee benefit payment.  It’s important to note that the financial performance of the Company was not Mr. Meldrum’s only priority.  On countless occasions his Company responded to family crises suffered by many of the hundreds of employees and their families and was first in line to provide sufficient support to see them through great difficulties.

Mr. Meldrum and his Company maintained his contractor’s license issued by the state of Nevada “in good standing” for the entire 52 years he operated, and to this day there has never been a single complaint or disciplinary action filed against him or his Company.  In 2003, Mr. Meldrum was recognized by the Nevada Contractors Association as the Contractor of the Year.

During the years Mr. Meldrum was running Southern Nevada Paving, he began purchasing and developing what became several hundred acres of industrial property in North Las Vegas and Clark County.  Following the sale of the Southern Nevada Paving, Mr. Meldrum recruited national businesses to southern Nevada and completed “build-to-suit” projects for such companies as Clearwater Paper Corporation, Adesa Auto Auction and Stocks Building Supply.  Each of these companies created hundreds of jobs for southern Nevada residents.

Mr. Meldrum has always demonstrated a keen responsibility to leave more than a legacy in the construction of buildings and roadways. That sense of duty has motivated him to contribute millions of dollars to higher education to provide new facilities, scholarships and other improvements including buildings and an up to date laboratory.  For many years to come, his efforts will provide opportunities for students to acquire training and job-related skills preparing them to enter the workforce. Floyd Meldrum came from a family of modest means and earned a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering which enabled everything in his professional and business life that followed, and he remains committed to helping others find similar achievement.

Floyd A. Meldrum is the very definition of the American success story.  He successfully built a reputation of unquestioned integrity and incomparable work ethic while providing a living wage for hundreds of employees and their families.  Mr. Meldrum has been, and is today, personally involved in everything his name and business represents.  His commitment to his family, community, country and the industry he helped move forward, has earned him the respect of all who know him.
